Abstract: Target frequency response estimation in the case of stochastic extended targets is an essential part of a cognitive radar system. A new efficient and practical target spectrum estimation method is proposed based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals. The proposed estimation procedure can entirely suppress any unwanted signal and intelligently estimate the target spectrum in predefined subcarrier frequencies. We show that the proposed estimator is capable to exploit the important target frequency characteristic with high precision in heavy clutter and noise. Computer simulations express a promising precision by comparing the relevant Cramer-Rao bound and the mean square error (MSE) of numerical experiments.
