Abstract: In this paper we give the mathematical expressions that can be used to describe the form of a ship. By means of these expressions an electronic computer of the medium size can calculate the breadth at any point of a waterline of the ship with a precision of one mm; a precision that can not be obtained by designing the ship with the aid of draughtmen and by smoothing it by means of lath. The expressions for the surfaces of waterlines and frames and those for the volumes of the ship with all necessary hydrostatic particulars are also given and calculated. The Bull Netherlands Computing Centre has developed in colaboration with Wilton-Fijenoord a program so that from the values of a preliminary project the values for the constructions can be calculated at once by means of the electronic computer Gamma E.T. This method gives an appreciable reduction of wages on loft and designing department. After 1946 all ships constructed at Wilton-Fijenoord were laid off with success in a similar way, which method now improved by means of an electronic computer. In one day time it will now be possible to furnish the yard with all necessary information for the loft and designing department. In this way the time to construct a vessel will also be reduced and the accuracy of the work will be improved.
