Abstract: This paper presents the results of a theoretical and experimental investigation of the contribution of trapped air cavities to the hydrostatic stability of marine vehicles. The trapped ah is contained within open bottom tanks mounted on the vehicles. The action of vessel motions and waves on the air forms a pneumatic compliance which serves to reduce the vessel motion response to waves. A derivation for the stiffness of the trapped air is presented and developed into a form suitable for application to hydrostatics within conventional naval architecture. Results from theory are verified by comparison with model test data for a semisubmersible and monohull vessel.
