Abstract: This paper first introduces the theory of fuzzy sets into the realm of ship structural design. A formulation to fuzzy optimization problems of structures is given. The concept that a fuzzy optimization problem has the property of two-solution is then described. Using the associated computational method one can obtain a fuzzy solution and a crisp solution to select structural design schemes. It is shown by illustrative numerical examples of ship structures that the proposed approach is reasonable and effective.
