Abstract: A steady-state model of the flow of working fluid through a diesel engine and its turbocharger may be a large part of a mathematical model intended for computer simulation of engine and propulsion system transients. A steady flow model for a four-stroke turbocharged engine is presented, and the evaluation of its terms is described. In particular, methods of using engine operational data to evaluate cylinder volumetric efficiency, charge air cooler effectiveness, scavenging flow area, turbine nozzle area, and turbocharger turbine pulse factor are described and accompanied by sample calculations.
