Abstract: The available analytical solutions for the acceleration coefficients and for the potential flow around ellipsoids or spheroids immersed in fluid that is either infinite in extent or is bounded by a confocal ellipsoid surface are summarized. In particular the solutions for a rotating inner ellipsoid in the presence of a fixed outer confocal ellipsoid are revised in this paper. The above analytical results are used to check a three dimensional finite element potential flow analysis applied to a ship manoeuvring in an arbitrary shaped canal or water channel.
