Abstract: Ship navigators and off-shore engineers are all faced with the various problems of ships or marine structures in confined waters. Ship hydromechanics and model basin techniques are called upon in the search for high performance and safety. After a brief survey of shallow water phenomena this paper presents some features of a new laboratory at SSPA in Gothenburg, designed with special attention to shallow water problems. The arrangement of height-adjusted wave flaps is discussed in the light of pre-design wave form experiments. In 1977, before the installation of the wave-generators and the wide-span multi-motion carriage, the basin was used for a variety of special studies of ship behaviour in shallow water, mostly by means of remotely controlled 5 m models. The description here includes some results of definite model trial manoeuvres with the subsequent identification of hydrodynamic parameters, of the motion of a model past a short bank and a comparative simulation, of the additional squat experienced due to a local shallow, and of the wave-making of a model at near-to-critical speed.
