Abstract: A new method to determine the average non periodic hydrodynamic forces and moments exerted on a ship in waves, is advanced. The calculating formulae are derived for unmoving and moving ships among waves in deep and shallow water. The results of Kochin, Haskind, Havelock, Maruo, Newman are obtained from author’s analysis as particular cases. A very simple formula is proposed for practical evaluation of the added resistance of a ship in oblique waves. The results can be applied to ships in irregular waves.
