Abstract: The guided wave technology is usually applied to detect defects in the regular zone. In this paper, the guided wave technology is applied to detect the flaw in the transition zone of sucker rods where is an irregular zone. A piecewise model is established by making a difference between the down step flaw and the up step flaw. The experiments are carried on a sucker rod sample with the artificial notch flaws in the transition zone using magnetostrictive guided waves. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical predictions. The result indicates that the guided wave technology could be applied to inspect some special irregular structures.
