Note: [*] Version of a paper presented at the National Federation of Abstracting and Information Services (NFAIS) 30th Anniversary Conference, The Database Business: Managing Today – Planning for Tomorrow, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 1, 1988.
Abstract: BIOSIS' approach to machine-aided indexing is detailed from a production point of view. Emphasis is placed on computer support for indexers and on problems encountered with this approach. Future considerations are explored, particularly an interactive online system for indexers. Potential impacts of such a system on training, indexing, quality control and the indexers themselves, as well as other organizational concerns and possible benefits, are also discussed.
