The integration of the information and communication functions, and the marketing of the resulting products*

Abstract: This paper discusses the theoretical basis for integration of information functions (storage and retrieval, abstracting, indexing, collecting and disseminating, reference and referral) and communication functions (writing, editing, broadcast, production of non-print media for training or information dissemination); the relevance of this integration in the scientific information cycle; and how such an. integration can have a positive effect on commodity research networks. The paper illustrates, the application of the theory and strategies with a specific set of audiences, objectives, and tasks-those that have developed from three of CIAT's commodity programs (cassava, beans, tropical pastures) and the networks of collaborators with which they work. The paper also discusses the marketing of information products and services.
