Abstract: This paper discusses the nature of middle management activity in light of observations of a manager's work, and examines his information gathering, storing, retrieving and communicating habits. It asserts that his job is entirely one of information processing, and draws some tentative conclusions about the assistance needed to facilitate his work—and in particular his decision making activities.
