Abstract: Practically all the relevant STM publishers, aggregators, and the major science libraries have rushed to incorporate OpenURLs and link resolvers in their staple offerings. Still, the revolution is far from having reached its end, as the new standard OpenURL 1.0 is about to be released by NISO, allowing for a much larger range of applications. While commercial providers have developed mature solutions for libraries, breakthrough applications of the OpenURL in other domains still loom behind the horizon. The article provides an overview of the new standard's features, summarizes some trends of current applications, and gives an outlook of new services to be expected in the wake of OpenURL technology.
