Note: [1] The text of this article, lightly edited, was delivered as a lecture at the Bibliostar Conference on electronic resources held in Milan at the Palazzo delle Stelline on 14 and 15 March 2002 and organised by the proprietors of the celebrated Italian periodical “Biblioteche Oggi”. My remit from Dottor Massimo Belotti, the Editor of “Biblioteche Oggi” was to speak about the negative aspects and the problems commonly encountered with digitisation and was meant to be provocative and to stimulate some debate. As is pointed out in the paper the contents are consequently somewhat “negative” but were written with this remit and deliberate slant and do not represent the author’s personal views.
