Abstract: The paper presents an overview of how recent advancements in information and communication technologies (ICT) have brought adult learning and professional development into the centre of the global educational agenda. The contributions of adult learning theory and enhancements to practice made possible by microcomputer applications, networks and virtual communities are addressed. New modes of distance learning using ICT to expand educational delivery to remote learners are considered. Existing and potential roles of ICT in workplace learning and professional development are examined with recent examples of innovative European pilot projects that seek to raise awareness and provide examplars of good practice. The UK context is illustrated by the forthcoming University for Industry’s LearnDirect initiative, which will seek to extend the benefits of lifelong learning to all adults whether at home or in the workplace.
