Abstract: This presentation looks at the functions of an information department in industry and examines how the combination of the changing managerial attitudes towards information and the ongoing technological developments are redefining these functions. The author focuses on progress towards the electronic library, identifies user needs which could be satisfied through the introduction of new technology and addresses some of the acute problems confronting the information community.
