Abstract: An Executive Information System (EIS) is a computer-based information system that is designed to directly satisfy the special information needs of top managers. An EIS enables management to track the organization's performance, to focus on potential problem areas, and to take action to address specific issues. This paper discusses some key application concerns in planning an EIS. In order to make the discussion more concrete, it illustrates the use of an EIS in a retail bank setting where management has to ensure that customers are provided with a high level of service. The paper describes the ways that an EIS could assist management, how it could be used to monitor prime indicators of an organization's performance, and proposes an action agenda for management planning to implement an EIS.
