Abstract: Humans are thinking, computers are calculating. A synergy of their respective strengths may result in impressive performances. Several experiments with the 3-HIRN combination have shown that an amateur player is able to improve the strength of much stronger chess programs by more than a class. On Grandmaster level “Advanced Chess” has been introduced by Kasparov. In August 2000, an experimental match at the University of Jena was conducted to investigate the question whether an “Advanced team” with a Grandmaster and a slow computer can outplay an autonomous chess program on a fast computer.
