Note: [1] This is, but for a few corrections, a printed version of an invited presentation, delivered on June 13, 1990 to the NAIC’90 (Nederlandstalige Artificial Intelligence Conferentie) on the NVKI meeting (Nederlandse Vereniging voor Kunstmatige Intelligentie) in Rolduc, Kerkrade, Limburg, The Netherlands. Due to Prof. dr. Zuse’s illness the text then has been presented by Prof. dr. R.A.J. Ord-Smith (University of Bradford, U.K.). The Editors gratefully acknowledge permission from the NVKI and from Professor Zuse to publish this version. An earlier version of this lecture has been presented by Professor Zuse at a symposium in Lund, Sweden on October 2, 1987, under the title Computer Design – Past, Present, Future. The NAIC’90 Conference was part of a joint NAIC’90 / AIT’90 Conference held under the aegis of the NVKI and the Working Group on Expert Systems in the same location during June 13–15, 1990. The conference has been generously sponsored by N.V. Koninklijke Sphinx, DSM, SWOL, PIT Telecom, Spaarbank Limburg, The City of Maastricht, The Research Institute for Knowledge-based Systems (RIKS), The University of Limburg (Computer Science Department), Netherlands Central Statistical Office (CBS), Chamber of Commerce Maastricht, The Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the Nederlands Genootschap voor Informatica (section ASI).
