Abstract: Mutation of p53 gene is known to be one of the most common specific
gene change in human cancers, although the role of the gene alternation on
malignant transformation is still controversial. In this study, we report the
immunolocalization of p53 protein, as well as PCNA and MIB-1, in inverted
papilloma (IP) associated with squamous cell carcinoma. p53 positive nuclei
were absent in the normal mucosa, basally localized in benign portion of IP and
diffusely observed in the squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Not only the number of
positive nuclei, but also the change of distribution correlate to those of PCNA
and MIB-1. The results suggest the important role of mutant p53 gene on
malignant transformation of IP.
