Abstract: The emerging field of Informetrics is described in a historical perspective as a generalisation of Bibliometrics. The new approach is the combination of advanced information retrieval theories and methodologies with the quantitative study of information flows. The close connection to KDD (Knowledge Discovery Date) and the various mining technique is emphasised. It is an appeal to modern LIS professionals to face the challenge of this new area of quantitative studies, and learn to explore the databases not only for retrieval of documents or facts but also as tools for analytical work. Research based education, with references to methodological studies in Informetrics, is shortly to be presented through the programme of the Center for Informetric Studies (CIS) at the Royal School of Library and Information Science in Copenhagen.
