Abstract: The historical genesis of international pedestrian bridge design load criteria is explored as a prelude to a presentation of current practice around the world. Present bridge design codes in Australia, the USA, Canada, Europe and Hong Kong are reviewed. Characteristic live loads, provisions for vehicle access, longitudinal effects, dynamic response criteria and deflection limits are described. The effect of limit state design principles, particularly the load factors nominated in design codes are explored. The considerable differences that exist, internationally, in design criteria for pedestrian bridge loads are discussed.
